Summer is finally here (or at least trying to be), and with it comes the annual hunt for the perfect pair of shoes that are light, stylish, and won’t wreck your feet. If you’re on a barefoot journey like me, or just dipping a toe in, you’ll know how tricky it is to find something that actually fits a foot-shaped foot and looks put-together.

Enter: the Shapen Barefoot PLAYA espadrilles – a long-overdue barefoot update on the classic summer slip-on.
In this post, I’m diving into what makes them stand out, what to consider if you’re shopping in the UK, and how they compare to the usual suspects in the barefoot world.
A Classic Reimagined for Barefoot Living
Espadrilles have been a summer staple for decades, but conventional versions are often tight, rigid, and completely the wrong shape for natural feet. Shapen have done something really clever here: they’ve taken that timeless, Mediterranean-style look and reimagined it in true barefoot form. Think: sleek, breathable, and foot-respecting, with none of the pinching or tapering you get from traditional high street espadrilles.

Here’s what you get:
- Zero drop sole
- Anatomical shape – no crushed toes and in 2 different widths
- Thin and flexible 3 mm rubber sole
- Organic cotton upper
- 100% breathable microline lining and insole
- Made ethically in the European Union
It’s the best of both worlds: a feminine, flattering aesthetic and all the benefits of a barefoot design.
Style: Effortless, Elegant & Feminine
Let’s talk looks. The PLAYA is one of the most elegant barefoot shoes I’ve seen in a long time. They have that classic, relaxed espadrille silhouette, but because they actually follow the shape of your foot, they feel modern and surprisingly refined.
They’re currently available in three colours:
- Beige – classic, clean and goes with everything
- Rose Pink – soft and feminine (this is the one I have!)
- Indigo Blue – deeper and more versatile than you’d expect
The rose pink is particularly lovely: it’s subtle, not overly bright, and gives just enough colour to feel summery without clashing with your wardrobe.

And a big YES from me on the subtle branding. There’s nothing worse than a gorgeous shoe ruined by a chunky logo. These feel timeless, understated and grown-up.
Fit & Sizing: Two Widths That Actually Matter
One of the best things about Shapen (and honestly, why I rate them so highly as a brand) is their commitment to offering two distinct widths. The PLAYA comes in:

- Regular width – ideal for narrower, Egyptian-shaped feet (that’s when your big toe is longest and your foot tapers)
- Wide width – perfect for wider, more square-shaped feet like mine
I have both widths in rose pink, and the difference is genuinely meaningful—not just a token “wide fit” like you find from some brands.

As someone with EEE width, I can say confidently that the wide version of the PLAYA works beautifully for me. It respects my foot’s natural shape and allows full toe splay without looking bulky or oversized.
That said, the canvas upper does feel snug initially, especially compared to some of Shapen’s other models. This suggests the PLAYA is lower volume, meaning those with higher instep or thicker feet might feel a bit of pressure across the top at first. If you’re in between sizes or unsure, I’d suggest going with the wider option if you have any doubts.
Comfort: No Break-In, No Socks, No Problem
I felt comfortable in them straight out of the box. There’s no break-in period and no need for socks (although you absolutely could wear them with no-show liners if you prefer).

Despite the insole being glued in, it’s soft, breathable and doesn’t feel sweaty even on warmer days. The microline material used for the lining and insole has a suede-like feel and excellent breathability.
One note: while they feel fine in damp conditions, I wouldn’t choose to wear the pink pair in heavy rain purely because of the colour. These are definitely better for dry weather days, city strolls, or travel adventures.
Sole & Ground Feel: That Sweet Barefoot Balance
The 3 mm rubber sole is flexible and thin enough to offer good ground feel, but still protective enough for urban pavements or even cobblestones. It’s not the thinnest sole out there (like Wildlings or Tikki), but it strikes a good balance for those who want minimal without going full primal.

There’s a decent texture to the outsole, and while I haven’t done a full soak test, they’ve felt secure and grippy, even on smooth surfaces like tile and laminate.
Travel-Friendly & Lightweight
Another big tick for the PLAYA espadrilles: they’re ultra lightweight and pack flat, which makes them perfect for travel. Whether you’re off on a weekend city break or just chucking a pair in your bag for a warm-weather getaway, they won’t weigh you down.
Who Are They For?
These espadrilles are a great option for all barefooters, whether you’re a seasoned minimalist or just starting out. They’re ideal for:
- Women looking for fashionable barefoot shoes in the UK
- People who struggle with EEE width feet or square foot shapes
- Those wanting a smart-casual summer shoe for holidays, city walks, or warm office days
- Anyone tired of cramming their feet into shoes that just don’t fit properly

Because of their slim profile and breathable materials, they’re a brilliant entry point for beginners but also stylish enough to appeal to long-time barefoot lovers who are bored of clunky designs.
Where to Buy in the UK
If you saw my recent Primark comparison video, you’ll know I featured the PLAYA there – and yes, they really are that much better than conventional high-street options.

Final Thoughts: A Summer Staple for the Barefoot Crowd
The Shapen PLAYA espadrilles are everything I’ve been looking for in a summer barefoot shoe: feminine, breathable, foot-shaped, and stylish enough to wear with just about anything. Whether you’re pairing them with floaty dresses, linen trousers, or your favourite denim shorts, they add a light, elegant touch without compromising on natural foot freedom.
It’s rare to find something that truly ticks all the boxes, but for me, these absolutely do. Just be mindful of the snug canvas upper if you have higher-volume feet, and stick to dry weather if you’ve gone for a lighter colour.
Otherwise?
They’re a winner.
