Serene I Barefoot Mules Review – A Stylish Step into Barefoot Comfort

If you’ve been waiting for a barefoot version of the iconic Birkenstock-style mule, your patience has finally paid off. The new Serene I Barefoot Mules from budget-friendly barefoot brand Saguaro are here, and they are an absolute game-changer in the world of minimalist footwear. I’m thrilled to be reviewing these, not only because they tick so many barefoot boxes, but also because they look so good doing it.

Fashion Meets Function in the Barefoot World

Let’s face it, finding fashionable barefoot shoes can still feel like a mission. So many people long for familiar, classic styles but with the healthy foot-shaped twist. The Serene I mules deliver exactly that, offering a minimalist and elegant design nearly identical to the classic Birkenstock clog, but with all the features we love about barefoot footwear.

Whether you’ve got your eye on something comfy for school runs, quick errands or relaxed indoor wear, these are a fantastic new addition to the barefoot niche.

A Quick Look at the Aesthetic

Available in grey and tan faux suede, as well as black or dark brown faux leather (lined versions), the Serene I mules are the kind of stylish, neutral-toned shoe that slips seamlessly into most wardrobes. I absolutely love the colour range, they’re earthy, subtle and elegant.

The model features the classic mule back strap, which gives you versatility. You can flick it over the top of the shoe for a true slip-on feel or buckle it around your heel for a more secure fit. Think convenience with options. The back strap also has several belt-style holes for adjustment, as well as a discreet elastic section that lets your foot move naturally into the shoe without constantly fiddling with the buckle.

Barefoot Features That Matter

These mules come packed with all the essential barefoot design elements:

  • Zero Drop: There’s no heel lift at all, meaning your heel and forefoot are on the same level. This supports natural posture and alignment.
  • Wide Toe Box: Designed to let your toes splay naturally, reducing pressure points and allowing for full foot function.
  • Flexible Sole: At 4.5mm thick, the natural rubber outsole encourages free movement and natural gait.
  • Lightweight Build: At only 208g per shoe (based on EU39), they feel barely-there, keeping your movement effortless and light.
  • Removable Insole: With a 4mm insole, you can fine-tune your feel or switch it out for a custom footbed if needed.

The materials are also worth mentioning:

  • Upper: Microfibre (faux suede or faux leather depending on the version)
  • Lining: Microfibre
  • Outsole: 100% natural rubber

Unfortunately, they’re not too breathable, being synthetic. I found them quite sweaty without socks, so I prefer to wear them with socks.

Note: These are not waterproof and should not be machine washed. A soft brush or cloth wipe is best for keeping them fresh.

My Fit Experience

My feet are 24cm long, and I usually wear a UK5.5 or EU39 in barefoot shoes. I went for my usual EU39 in the Serene I and found them to be true to size. They fit my wide and square feet very well, which is a massive win.

The toe box allows for full splay without being overly bulky, and the shape hugs the foot just right, it doesn’t feel too sloppy or too loose when worn with the strap around the back, but they’re not the most securely attached barefoot shoes I own!

When and Where to Wear Them

Let’s talk about functionality. The Serene I barefoot mules are incredibly comfortable and easy to wear, but I wouldn’t recommend them for long walkshiking or extended shifts on your feet. They’re not that kind of shoe.

This is where expectations matter. These are perfect for:

  • Lounging at home
  • Quick errands
  • The school run
  • Slipping on at the garden door
  • Casual social outings

They’re a fantastic choice for those everyday moments where you want something fuss-free yet supportive of natural foot movement.

When worn without the strap around the heel, they’re more of a slip-on house shoe, ideal for around the home. For short outings, I prefer to wear the strap properly to secure the fit a little more.

A Word on Stability

Because they’re backless when the strap isn’t in use, there is naturally less foot control than a fully enclosed barefoot shoe. That’s not a flaw — it’s just part of the mule design. I wouldn’t wear these for dog walks or gym sessions, but for lighter use, they’re spot on.

I do think they make an especially good choice for people who want a barefoot house shoe but don’t want to compromise on looks. You’ll never need to explain what’s on your feet — these could pass for mainstream fashion.

What Makes the Serene I Mules Special

  1. They look like normal shoes – no one will bat an eye.
  2. They feel like barefoot shoes – all the right features, all the right flex.
  3. They’re affordable – and with my discount code, even more so.
  4. They’re easy to wear – versatile enough for indoor and casual outdoor use.

Final Thoughts

The Serene I Barefoot Mules are a brilliant step forward in bringing barefoot features into more mainstream silhouettes. Saguaro has done a great job here — these are budget-friendlyvisually appealing, and functionally sound for everyday wear.

They’re not a replacement for your barefoot hiking boots or your all-day work barefoot shoes, but they’re not meant to be. They’re perfect for what they are: stylish, casual, easy barefoot mules that honour foot function while looking effortlessly cool.

If you’re looking for something simple, affordable and wearable that still supports your barefoot lifestyle, I highly recommend giving these a try.
