Overview: We were recently gifted three pairs of LEX Barefoot shoes for my girls to try out—Ruby Red for my 4-year-old, and Sandstone and Lilac for my 2-year-old. These shoes quickly became favourites, worn regularly, which speaks to their comfort and appeal. LEX Barefoot is known for designing shoes that allow natural foot movement, and their bold block colours truly make them stand out. [NB: My daughter had just had her birthday party at which they both had their toenails painted!]

Design & Aesthetics:

One thing that instantly catches the eye is the bright, bold colours—particularly the Ruby Red, which is incredibly vibrant. The Sandstone is trendy for 2024, adding a modern, neutral option. The shoes feature a rounded, dome-like shape, giving them a high-volume appearance, which works well for growing feet that need more room to move and develop naturally. I wouldn’t describe the shoes as “chunky,” since the soles are flat and visually thin, but the upper part of the shoe does have a tall, rounded look that I think will suit children with higher volume feet.

Key Features:

LEX shoes come with several barefoot-friendly features, which are crucial for ensuring that little feet stay unrestricted:

  • Wide toe-box: There’s ample room for toes to splay naturally.
  • Zero Drop (mostly): Apart from the lilac pair (which has a 2mm drop due to a factory fault), both the Ruby Red and Sandstone pairs are truly zero drop. This helps maintain a neutral foot position, which is ideal for balance and posture. I would recommend sticking to the newer models if zero drop is important to you.
  • Flexible, lightweight sole: At only a few millimetres thick, the sole allows for great ground feel without compromising on durability or comfort.
  • Easy to clean: The vegan soft leather is not only ethically made, but also practical for busy parents.
  • Easy to put on: The single Velcro strap makes it incredibly simple for my 2-year-old to independently put on her shoes, which is always a win for both parent and child!

Comfort & Fit:

From the moment my girls slipped them on, they’ve worn their LEX Barefoot shoes regularly, which is always a great sign of comfort. The shoes are soft and lightweight, with a wide enough toe box to let their feet move naturally. My younger daughter has really taken to the lilac and sand pairs, frequently choosing them over other options, which shows just how comfortable they are for her. The Ruby Red ones are a staple for my 4-year-old—they look fantastic and feel just as good.

A Note on Sizing:

We stuck to the sizing chart provided by LEX and didn’t have any issues with fit, but I would advise carefully measuring your child’s feet and following their size guide. The shoes do feel slightly roomy, so even with a zero-drop sole, they have a dome-like appearance that accommodates high-volume feet well. If your child has wide feet, this would be a great option for them.

Conclusion:

For parents seeking a vibrant, barefoot-friendly shoe that allows for natural foot development, LEX Barefoot shoes are a fantastic choice. With their wide toe-box, thin sole, and flexible design, they cater to growing feet while offering a unique, colourful style. While there was a minor issue with the Lilac pair (due to a 2mm drop caused by a factory fault), the newer models maintain their commitment to zero drop. My girls absolutely love them, and they’re now a key part of our everyday wardrobe.
