If you’re searching for barefoot sandals for your children, you’re in the right place. What Are Barefoot Shoes?
Let’s start with the basics. Barefoot shoes are designed to mimic natural barefoot movement while offering just enough protection from the ground. There are five key features that define a true barefoot shoe:
- Flat (zero drop from heel to toe)
- Thin (just enough sole to protect, not restrict)
- Foot-shaped (wide toe box that allows toes to splay naturally)
- Securely attached (no flip-flops or loose styles)
- Flexible (should bend easily in all directions)
These five elements are crucial to supporting your child’s natural development, and sadly, most mainstream kids’ shoes don’t tick these boxes.
A Note on Traditional Brands (Clarks & Start-Rite)
Many parents turn to familiar names like Clarks or Start-Rite for school and summer shoes, but only their pre-walker ranges come close to being barefoot-friendly. As soon as you size up into their main collections, shoes quickly become narrow, tapered, stiff, and elevated at the heel, none of which align with barefoot principles.
Do Kids Need Sandals?
Not necessarily! I didn’t buy sandals for my boys until they were 7 and 5, and we managed perfectly well with breathable barefoot shoes and water shoes for beach and river play. In very hot weather, actual barefoot (bare feet!) is best.
So if sandals don’t feel like a practical use of your budget, don’t worry: they are not essential.
Are Salt-Water Sandals Barefoot?
This is a question I hear all the time. Salt-Water Sandals are popular, cute, and soft (eventually) but they’re not barefoot shoes.
Even though the leather softens and flexes over time, Salt-Water Sandals have a raised heel, stiff sole, and narrow shape. They don’t tick the barefoot boxes, and I don’t recommend them for foot health.

- Sainsbury’s sometimes have great canvas T-bar or water shoe styles (2025’s Bluey sandals were a hit!) as seen in my video here:
- Nike Sunray and certain New Balance models (e.g. SIA809K3) can fit the barefoot brief, but they’re hard to find and not always reliable from season to season
- B&M / ASDA occasionally stock flexible canvas sandals or jelly shoes – hit and miss but worth a look! Always wear socks with supermarket jelly shoes.

Final Thoughts
You don’t need to buy sandals just because it’s summer. Barefoot is best when it’s hot, and many children will thrive with lightweight shoes or just water shoes for specific activities.
