When it comes to blending style with the barefoot shoe philosophy, the new JOA Barefoot PHALANX model truly stands out. As a new company, JOA Barefoot has made a strong debut with this model, showcasing a commitment to both form and function. The products in this article were gifted in exchange for a review.
First Impressions:
We recently took our new PHALANX sneakers for a spin during our belated 9th anniversary celebration at the Mailbox in Birmingham. The posh atmosphere of the restaurant was perfectly complemented by the sophisticated look of the PHALANX sneakers. We felt both stylish and comfortable, thanks to the thoughtful design and premium materials used in these shoes. Despite them being a narrow fit, the natural, soft leather didn’t feel as restrictive as some other narrow brands.
Design and Fit:
The PHALANX sneakers are handcrafted in Portugal, featuring Italian suedes and leathers, a microfiber heel lining, and waxed cotton laces. The craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the soft upper to the specially designed outsole. The wide toe box allows natural toe splay, contributing to stability and balance, while the zero drop promotes a healthier posture. However, it’s important to note that they have a narrow fit, similar to Vivobarefoot, and are best suited for those with narrower feet. For those with wider, square feet like myself, they may not provide the perfect fit but still offer greater comfort than mainstream, tapered brands. They are fully flexible and offer a good compromise for those prioritising fashion.
Barefoot Function:
True barefoot function is somewhat compromised for those with square foot shapes. In my experience, the narrow design prevents optimal push-off from the 3rd and 4th toes. For full foot function, especially if prioritising this over fashion, I would recommend a wider brand. However, narrow-footed people are likely to experience better foot function with these sneakers.
Style and Practicality:
JOA Barefoot has successfully avoided the “clown” look often associated with barefoot shoes by adding an extra area of material at the toe, making the PHALANX sneakers appear more like standard sneakers. This design choice makes them an ideal option for those looking for stylish barefoot shoes that don’t sacrifice function. The inclusion of spare laces and insoles adds to the premium feel, ensuring that these sneakers will last a long time.
Performance:
The PHALANX sneakers are incredibly comfortable, thanks to their flexible sole and minimal zero-drop cushion. Despite my toes not having as much room as in some other barefoot brands, these shoes still allow natural movement and are not as restrictive as mainstream footwear. They offer an excellent compromise between style and barefoot functionality.
Customer Experience:
Our interaction with Joakim Pagels, the founder, was a highlight of our experience. His passion for barefoot shoes and commitment to quality resonated deeply with us. Joakim was very helpful in clarifying sizing, ensuring we chose the right fit for our needs. Supporting a passionate individual with a drive to transform the fashion industry by prioritising function over fashion is something we wholeheartedly endorse.
Packaging and Extras:
JOA Barefoot has gone above and beyond to create an exceptional unboxing experience. The PHALANX sneakers come in premium silver presentation boxes that exude luxury. Each pair includes additional laces, spare insoles, and a handy JOA Tote Bag. This thoughtful packaging makes you feel like you’re getting more than just a sneaker. JOA Barefoot clearly wants to look after their customers and make them feel special.
Outsole Design:
The PHALANX features an unusual outsole design, visible only on the underside. While the stark, bean-shaped rubber sole might look odd at first, it provides excellent non-slip properties and complements the shoe’s overall design. This innovative design aligns with the shoe’s minimalist and barefoot principles.
Timeless Design:
The PHALANX sneakers are a classic and timeless shoe design that everyone needs in their wardrobe. They are ideal for everyday wear (as seen in a photo of me dressed down wearing them) but also perfect for “going out” (another photo shows me dressed smarter for a date). Their versatility makes them a valuable addition to any shoe collection.
Value and Pricing:
The PHALANX sneakers are priced at £150. While this may be on the higher end for barefoot shoes, the price reflects the high-quality materials and craftsmanship. However, it’s important to note that they are shipped duty unpaid, so recipients in the UK should be prepared for a customs charge of around 20%. This additional cost and the narrow fit are why I’ve given them a BarefootBrit 👣 rating of 7. Despite these considerations, the PHALANX sneakers remain an excellent investment for those seeking stylish barefoot shoes.
The JOA Barefoot PHALANX sneakers are possibly one of the most “normal” looking barefoot shoes on the market, making them an appealing option for many. We believe that shoes like these have the potential to change people’s perception of barefoot footwear. My husband and I will definitely be using these for special occasions where the dress code is smart casual. We look forward to seeing how JoaBarefoot evolves and wish Joakim and his team the best of success in their journey.
