Over the years, my footwear philosophy has narrowed down to a simple truth: our feet are magnificent, intricately designed structures that work best when we let them behave naturally. If you have been following my journey for a while, you will know how passionate I am about true barefoot shoes. You will also know how extraordinarily picky I am about fit, shape, and materials. “Regular” shoes just don’t cut it, whether it’s shape, rigidity, thickness, narrowness or a combination of all of it. It’s NEVER good to walk on mattresses! Such thick foam, at the very least, dulls the senses we have between our brain and the ground.

At the Frankfurt Barefoot Shoe Expo, July 2026

Recently, while attending the barefoot shoe fair in Frankfurt, I had the pleasure of meeting Lavinia and Monica from the Romanian brand ERDA. ERDA originally made waves with their beautifully constructed, flexible children’s footwear, but they have now taken a bold, thoughtful step into the adult market with their Grounding Collection. They kindly gifted me a pair of the new ERDA Connect in the Sand colourway.

Connect in Sand

The Connect launches on Monday 21st September 2026 in three classic, versatile colours: Anthracite (black), Silver Grey, and Sand. Since getting my hands on them, I have put serious mileage into this pair. Between navigating my tricky, hard-to-fit toe shape and testing out the curious world of integrated copper earthing technology, here is my detailed, in-depth review of the ERDA Connect.

What Makes a Shoe Truly “Barefoot”? The 5 Essential Pillars

Before diving into the specifics of the Connect, let us revisit the fundamental criteria that define a genuine barefoot shoe. Whenever I review any footwear on this blog, it must be measured against these five non-negotiable attributes:

  1. Completely Flat (Zero-Drop): There should be no height difference whatsoever between the heel and the ball of the foot. Traditional trainers and dress shoes almost always incorporate an elevated heel, which alters your natural centre of gravity, tilts the pelvis forward, and shortens the Achilles tendon. A zero-drop profile restores your natural postural alignment.
  2. Thin Soles: The human foot is packed with thousands of nerve endings designed to read the terrain beneath you. Thick, cushioned foam dampens this critical sensory feedback, leaving your brain guessing about the surface you are walking on. A thin sole keeps you constantly receiving feedback from the floor.
  3. Total Flexibility: If you pick up a barefoot shoe, you should be able to roll it into a tight ball or twist it like a dishcloth with minimal effort. Your feet have 26 bones, 33 joints, and over a hundred muscles and ligaments, all meant to flex, articulate, and absorb shock independently. A stiff, rigid shoe acts like a plaster cast, immobilising those structures and causing them to weaken over time.
  4. Securely Attached: Slip-on shoes, flip-flops, or loose backless footwear force your toes into a gripping or “clawing” action with every stride just to keep the shoe on your foot. A proper barefoot shoe must fasten securely across the instep via laces, straps, or buckles, freeing your toes to relax and splay naturally.
  5. Anatomically Foot-Shaped: This is the attribute that so many conventional brands get completely wrong. Modern shoes taper aggressively inwards towards the centre, squeezing the toes into a cramped, unnatural wedge. A barefoot shoe must mirror the genuine outline of an unconstrained human foot, flaring outward at the ball to allow full, natural toe splay.
Over time, shoes misshape the natural formation of our feet. If you want more info on barefoot shoes, click the image.

When measured against these five pillars, the ERDA Connect sits firmly on the very minimal end of the spectrum. It strips away all artificial foam and rigid counters, providing an authentic, lightweight barefoot experience.

The Fit: A Surprising Triumph for Square Roman Feet

Finding barefoot shoes that genuinely accommodate my feet is an ongoing challenge. My feet are distinctly Roman and quite square, meaning most of my toes are remarkably similar in length rather than sloping down from big toe to pinky.

Furthermore, my fourth toe lines up almost directly with my middle toe. This causes endless trouble because so many minimalist footwear brands, despite claiming to be foot-shaped, still taper down too prematurely towards the outer edge. When that happens, my fourth toe gets pushed back and restricted during toe-off. On my right foot, I also have to be mindful of my tailor’s bunion, which can easily flare up if an upper is stiff, narrow, or bulky.

Usually, the standard workaround is to size up. However, that creates another frustrating compromise: extra, unnecessary length ahead of my first three toes, which alters gait mechanics and can lead to tripping.

When I looked at the ERDA Connect, I noticed they lean visually towards an Egyptian shape, which normally slopes more steeply from the big toe downwards. I was prepared for a fit struggle, but in reality, the combination of width and interior volume suited my feet remarkably well.

The ERDA Connect neither aggravates the tailor’s bunion on my right foot nor puts unwanted pressure on the troublesome fourth toe on either foot. My regular size 39 fit perfectly based on length, without requiring me to size up to gain lateral room.

A large reason for this success is the construction of the upper. The canvas material is remarkably soft and thin, meaning the internal cavity is not eaten up by dense foam padding or stiff structural underlays. The shoe accommodates the volume of the midfoot gracefully, allowing my fourth toe the breathing room it needs without cramming the outside of the forefoot.

Materials, Craftsmanship, and Aesthetic Charm

Aesthetics matter just as much as function. Too often, minimalist shoes can look clunky or medicinal, but ERDA has knocked the styling out of the park with this collection.

The Connect in Sand is a stunning, warm neutral. It captures that effortless, earthy simplicity that pairs seamlessly with relaxed linen trousers, everyday denim, or casual shorts. The clean silhouette and refined proportions give it a modern, timeless aesthetic that looks deliberate and chic.

One small, delightful detail completely won me over: the additional duo-tone laces sold separately here . They incorporate a subtle, tasteful hint of olive green, which happens to be my absolute favourite colour. Slipping those laces in instantly transformed the shoe. They added a bespoke touch that made the pair feel intimately mine, and I found myself reaching for them constantly when getting dressed.

From a materials perspective, ERDA has leaned heavily into sustainable, breathable textiles:

  • Upper & Lining: Crafted from a canvas blend containing 70% recycled cotton and 30% Lenzing Ecovero, creating a lightweight, breathable environment that keeps feet cool and comfortable even during warmer weather.
  • Edging: Soft microfibre composed of 30% recycled polyamide and 70% polyamide for clean, durable finishing around the collar and seams.
  • Outsole: A thin, flexible, slip-resistant rubber blend containing 20% recycled rubber and 20% natural rubber, providing excellent grip and tactile floor feedback without unnecessary thickness.
  • Grounding Feature: An integrated, 100% pure copper element seamlessly embedded directly through the sole.

Grounding Technology and the Magic of Copper

The defining characteristic of ERDA’s new adult collection is their patent-pending copper grounding innovation.

Grounding, or earthing, revolves around the premise of restoring an electrical connection between the human body and the natural surface of the Earth. Modern synthetic footwear outsoles act as total electrical insulators, cutting us off from ambient negative electrons found in natural ground. ERDA tackles this by embedding a 100% pure copper monobloc plug right through the thin sole.

The copper element is placed beneath the midfoot, precisely aligned with the area associated with the solar plexus reflexology zone. In traditional reflexology, stimulating this point is thought to encourage relaxation, stress relief, and emotional grounding. Beyond reflexology, copper itself is one of nature’s greatest natural electrical conductors, renowned for its longevity and inherent antimicrobial properties. And for anyone wondering: don’t worry, you can’t feel it. Well, truthfully, you kinda can if you pay close attention, but it isn’t a bother in the slightest, and even that faint sensation is easily muted simply by slipping on a pair of socks.

It is worth noting an important distinction that often confuses newcomers: not all barefoot shoes are grounding shoes. While barefoot footwear excels at letting your feet move, flex, and feel the ground as nature intended, standard minimalist soles are almost always made of rubber, TPU, or synthetic compounds. These materials are electrical insulators, meaning they completely block the transfer of the Earth’s natural electrical charge. For a shoe to be truly grounding, it must feature a dedicated conductive pathway, which is precisely why ERDA’s integrated pure copper element is such a standout feature.

My Personal Experience

To be completely candid, I am not always entirely certain how much grounding technology affects me on a measurable physiological level. However, what I can say without hesitation is that I find myself reaching for the Connect day after day.

I am wearing Connect in Sand, with the duo Olive laces available separately

Last week, I had a particularly demanding, stressful day full of frantic schedules. Later that evening, I realised I had been wearing my Sand Connects through all the madness, and I remarked that I felt noticeably calmer and less rattled than I usually would have under that kind of pressure! Was it the copper element quietly doing its work on natural terrain, or simply the restorative comfort of an ultra-flexible barefoot sole that allowed my body to move freely? Either way, whether you are a dedicated believer in earthing or a curious sceptic, having that pure copper conduit nestled into a premium shoe is a lovely, natural bonus.

Since meeting Mirela, I purchased my own copper ring and bangle

Meeting Mirela in Frankfurt added another charming layer to this story. She was wearing the most striking copper jewellery during our conversation, which completely inspired me. A few weeks later, while browsing the open-air stalls at the market in Gdańsk, I could not resist purchasing a pure copper ring and matching bangle for myself. Wearing natural copper against the skin feels wonderful, tactile, and deeply connected to age-old traditions of holistic health.

What Else Does ERDA Offer?

While the adult Grounding Collection is their latest triumph, ERDA’s heritage lies in their exceptional handcrafted children’s range.

Erda use natural wool lining in their children’s shoes

I am an unapologetic lover of real wool, leather, and tactile natural textiles, which makes ERDA’s children’s collection a joy to browse. Their autumn and winter kids’ boots feature plush, genuine wool lining that ensures little toes stay wonderfully toasty during crisp, frosty months. Because wool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture away from the skin, it prevents damp, chilled feet during outdoor adventures.

I love the metallic straps!

The children’s models are crafted with the same wide, foot-shaped anatomical boxes and featherweight zero-drop outsoles that define healthy pre-walkers and toddlers’ shoes. They offer timeless, classic designs alongside playful metallic finishes for children who love a bit of sparkle.

For adults, ERDA currently offers several men’s options alongside the women’s styles. However, one important note for gents: their sizing currently tops out at EU 45. If you have feet larger than EU 45, you will unfortunately need to wait until they expand their mould sizes in future production runs.

Practical Buying Guidance

If you are ready to introduce a pair of ERDA shoes into your wardrobe, here are the essential logistics to keep in mind:

1. Sizing Advice

I found the sizing to be true to size. I took my regular size 39 based on my foot length measurements, and the shoe gave me the exact space I needed. Because the canvas upper is so supple, the shoe does not feel claustrophobic over the instep or around the forefoot. If you have squarer toes like me, you will likely be pleasantly surprised by how well the volume accommodates the outer toes without sizing up. Note that Erda adult models do not have insoles.

2. Shipping and Customs

ERDA handcrafts and ships their footwear directly from Romania. If you are ordering from the UK, you might understandably worry about crossing the dreaded cross-border threshold where extra taxes and courier handling fees usually kick in.

The brilliant news is that the team at ERDA have worked really hard behind the scenes to make ordering as smooth and accessible as possible for UK customers. They have adjusted and discounted shipping costs so that the final total for one paid with the discount code below comes out to €156.17, which converts to approximately £133.99.

This is deliberate and wonderfully thought-through: HMRC’s customs duty threshold is set at £135 based on the value of the goods. Because the final cost sits safely below that £135 mark, no additional customs duty or unexpected courier processing fees will be slapped on when your parcel arrives in the UK. You can order with total peace of mind, knowing that what you pay at checkout is the complete, final amount.

(If you are ordering from within the EU, the €150 single-market import bracket is similarly respected, ensuring seamless delivery across the board.)

Final Verdict

The ERDA Connect succeeds where many transitional barefoot models stumble. It delivers genuine, uncompromising barefoot mechanics: ultra-thin, completely flat, lightweight, and delightfully flexible, wrapped in a chic, understated sneaker silhouette.

For those of us with finicky, square-shaped Roman feet, it provides a surprisingly comfortable sanctuary that honours the fourth toe and spares the delicate fifth metatarsal. Combined with natural materials, lovely olive-accented laces, and the grounding benefits of a pure copper sole insert, it has earned a permanent, frequent spot in my daily rotation.
