The Story Behind Briar: Artisan Craftsmanship Meets Natural Movement
I first met Rose at the UK’s First Barefoot Expo in 2025 when she attended as a visitor. I was thrilled to meet a budding designer with such gorgeous shoes, and I am so glad I finally managed to get my hands on a pair in time for summer 2026!
Every pair of Briar sandals comes directly from Rose’s home studio. A lifelong crafter with a background in textiles, quilting, and garment making, Rose transitioned to barefoot footwear in 2012, eventually moving exclusively to minimalist shoes by 2021.
Driven by the challenge of finding comfortable shoes for her family’s wide feet, Rose attended a shoemaking workshop in late 2023. What started as prototype experiments for her husband and sons quickly evolved into something groundbreaking. While each pair is custom-crafted by hand, there is zero hint of homemade rough edges. The visual impact of Briar sandals is striking. The soft, premium leather comes in gorgeous earthy tones, embossed textures, and vibrant shades. As someone who loves green, I was tempted by the lovely green leathers available, but I deliberately swayed myself towards something different. The choice of colours is tricky, but I eventually settled on the wine red and I am very happy with my decision!
The midsole is made from foam in either 3mm or 5mm thickness, with a 3mm rubber, hard-wearing sole. Each of these comes in black, white, or beige/honey, allowing for exceptional customisability. Rose has a gallery on her website for some colour inspiration if you need it!
1. Infinite Strap Possibilities
When playing with strap placements, Rose developed a completely novel footwear design allowing for a four-toe-post construction—a radical departure from conventional single-toe-post flip-flops or sports sandals.
While the strap options are perhaps a little too many, I love that Rose sends a PDF with every order containing instructions to re-thread your leather straps into any of her “templates.” She offers around 16 preset templates, but the beauty of these sandals is that you can keep going with strap formation options—the possibilities are endless.
Crucially, you can change the strap formation to fit between all your toes, run through just one toe post, or wrap over the toes so nothing sits between them if you dislike that feeling for sensory reasons. 2. Edge Lacing Detailing
Running along the perimeter of the footbed is functional edge-lacing detail.
