When it comes to Forest School, mud kitchens and puddle-jumping, there’s one item of kit that gets asked about all the time: which barefoot shoes are best for forest school? Or more specifically: which barefoot wellies do you recommend?
It’s a great question and the answer depends heavily on how often your child wears wellies, how old they are, and what shape their feet are. This guide is here to help you navigate the many options out there, from budget-friendly picks to robust daily-use waterproof boots.

🌧️ Budget-Friendly Barefoot Wellies from Amazon
If your child only wears wellies a few times a year—for example, on the odd walk or holiday—then it might not make sense to splurge. That was my thinking when I picked up a few generic unbranded wellies from Amazon. If that link doesn’t work, there’s always several options in my Amazon List.

Why I love them:
- Surprisingly robust and durable (one pair has lasted all 4 of my kids!)
- Flexible sole with no heel rise
- Roomy for chubby feet, especially in smaller sizes
- Super affordable

Considerations:
- They narrow as the sizes go up, so not great for older kids with wide feet
- They’re low on the ankle, not high like traditional wellies
- Not perfectly anatomically shaped but much less tapered than supermarket styles
Still, these are miles better than what you’d pick up in Tesco or Next (where we once had a pair split on the first wear).
🏠 Mid-Range Quality Brands via Happy Little Soles
Happy Little Soles is a brilliant barefoot shoe stockist in the UK with a number of well-loved barefoot welly brands:
- Aigle – classic rubber wellies with a slightly more barefoot-friendly build
- Bundgaard – foot-shaped and flexible with good longevity
- Igor – smart and lightweight, great for occasional wear
- Froddo Barefoot Tex Boots – not a welly but a favoured option for Forest School
- Pokeboo – foldable adult wellies that pack up small
These are pricier than Amazon/eBay options, but worth it if your child is regularly outdoors and needs better protection, shape, and comfort. Don’t forget my code for some money off: BAREFOOTBRIT.
🌊 Minimal Waterproof Options
If you want something barefoot but don’t necessarily need a full-height welly, here are some interesting alternatives:
- Xero Shoes Gracie – link
- Feels like a regular welly but barefoot specs (zero drop, flexible)
- Very narrow fit; not great for wide feet

- Saguaro Brisk (Kids / Adults)
- Thin, flexible, and fits like a second skin
- Great grip on new sole design
- Not suitable for thorny terrain as they can pierce (not easily, though)

❄️ Winter-Ready Waterproof Boots
If your child needs warm and waterproof, you’ve got options!

- Jan & Jul:

- A favourite for my girls as they’re suitable for narrow feet
- Froddo Barefoot TEX Waterproof Ankle Boots (buy from Happy Little Soles)

- Koel Rana Boot – link
- Warm, soft, and comes higher up the leg than many other barefoot boots
- Great for everyday winter use
These are ideal for forest schoolers who are outdoors in all seasons and need solid winter protection.
🥶 Tiny Toes: New Walkers & Babies
For babies, cruisers, and new walkers, your best bet is keeping their feet warm and dry without compromising softness or movement:

- Waterproof bootie covers – link
- Great over leather shoes or socks
- Ideal for crawlers
🌟 Best Overall: The Wildling Rain Boot – Rainidae
If I had to choose just one barefoot welly for daily forest school use, it would be the Wildling Rainidae Rain Boot – shop here.

- Comes in 3 colours (adults: green & red-orange / kids: yellow & red-orange)
- Brilliant barefoot shape – wide toe box, flexible, zero drop
- Excellent build quality – robust for daily outdoor use
- Ethical and sustainable brand
- Use code AWN_Barefootbrit for free shipping!

The only thing missing? I’d love to see an even taller version in future releases. The calf circumference is very generous and they are overall very high volume.
The Newcomer – Be Lenka Pudds
New for AW2025 we have seen the launch of the aptly (and cutely) named Pudds from Be Lenka. These boots feel very much like your classic welly, but boast a proper human foot shape and a flat, flexible sole. Pudds are perfect for jumping in p..p..puddles! At only £49, they are actually very reasonably priced, too. Shop assured from Be Lenka now with ultra fast Fedex Shipping DDP (which means taxes are pre-paid, so no hidden charges when they arrive!) – and use BAREFOOTBRIT15 for a little bit of money off, too!

See what my daughter, Otylia (5) has to say about her Pudds on TikTok here or on Instagram / Facebook.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to forest school, the best barefoot welly is the one that balances your child’s needs, your budget, and the environment they’ll be using it in. From once-in-a-blue-moon splashes to daily woodland adventures, there’s something for everyone here.
Happy puddle-jumping!
