This is where the comparison gets incredibly interesting. As someone who loves natural materials like linen, leather, and cotton, synthetic shoes usually make me shudder. However, kids need waterproof, hose-cleanable shoes for British summers, beach trips, and muddy garden play.
If we have to buy a synthetic clog, we must look at what happens to that material when the shoe is worn out. This is where standard Crocs and Boatilus exist in completely different universes.

Olympia wanted a black pair, but we ended up with navy, which is a very minor aesthetic preference! More importantly, the ankle strap is completely non-adjustable. While an adjustable buckle would be a brilliant bonus feature for future iterations, it is worth remembering that standard Crocs do not feature adjustable straps either.
Crucially, the strap on a Boatilus clog does not swivel all the way forward over the top of the foot. On standard clogs, parents often flip the strap forward to turn the shoe into a simple slider. From a podiatry perspective, sliders are not barefoot-friendly. Without a secure heel attachment, a child’s toes are forced to grip the bottom of the shoe continuously to keep it on, which ruins their natural gait. By keeping the strap securely behind the heel, Boatilus ensures the shoe stays firmly attached to the foot, protecting the natural walking mechanism.
The Size Availability – Small Sizes Only
This is the biggest hurdle for our community at the moment. Currently, the size range is quite limited to smaller children. The restricted size bracket meant ruling out getting a pair for my sons entirely (age only 7 & 9). The wider barefoot community agrees completely: we absolutely need these extended into larger youth and even adult sizes!
Allergy and Ingredient Considerations
Because the brand is so innovative with its raw ingredients, it is vital to mention potential allergies. The inclusion of recycled oyster shells means these are not a vegan-friendly product, which is an important consideration for some families.
